Assessment Tools for Vietnamese

Funding: National Institutes of Health – National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH-NIDCD R01DC019335)

This study focuses on identifying developmental language disorder (DLD) in Vietnamese, an understudied yet widely spoken language (2 million in the US, 100 million worldwide). We have pioneered the study of DLD in Vietnam by establishing a multi-method classification system for DLD for kindergarten children and studying the connection between language and reading development from kindergarten through second grade. In the US, we have defined parameters for typical development (TD) in Vietnamese bilinguals in the early school years. The present study will build on our previous studies of monolingual Vietnamese DLD, and TD bilinguals, and extend our work to bilingual populations with DLD.
