Diagnosing developmental language disorder (DLD) in children can be a challenge, and sentence repetition and nonword repetition are tools that can aid identification. While these tools have been well-researched in English, what about its accuracy and reliability in Vietnamese?

The BDC Lab continues to host Vietnamese storytime for the San Diego community! It is one of our goals to promote Vietnamese language, literacy, and culture.

For the month of February, we read “Tết Together” (transl. Lunar New Year Together), written by Alice Trinh and illustrated by Jade Le, in honor of Lunar New Year. In March, we read “Gâu-đi-lóc-s và Ba Con Gấu” (transl. Goldilocks and the Three Bears) written by Kate Clynes and illustrated by Louise Daykin.

The BDC Lab hosts Vietnamese Storytime at Mira Mesa and City Heights libraries once a month. Check out our website for more details: https://bdc.sdsu.edu/storytime/

This semester the BDC lab has launched the Transcription project! We are transcribing language samples we collected using Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) software. SALT conventions are followed during this stage. This process allows for the creation of standard LSA reports.

Language sample analysis (LSA) is used to assess the spoken language abilities of bilingual children who speak Vietnamese or Spanish as a home language. LSA measures are culturally responsive, unbiased, and useful for assessing natural spoken language. Thus, are able to support current research being conducted and tasks for identifying Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in bilingual speakers. 🗣️🧂💻

The team at the BDC lab celebrated Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day!

DLD is a communication disorder that cannot be explained by any other condition. It is one of the most common developmental disorders, impacting 1 in 14 children in kindergarten. However, it is difficult to identify. DLD can affect a child’s speech, comprehension, reading, and writing. The disorder first emerges in childhood and can have long-term effects on someone’s academic, personal, and professional life. That said, treatment and support are available!

Bilingual children are frequently over- and under-identified with DLD. At the BDC lab, we are committed to serving bilingual families and children with and without language disorders.
